by Nancy Zerbey
“Name That House!” was originally published in Yankee Magazine in June, 1997.

Whether they come as leaf peepers, antiques hunters, or Freedom Trailers, travelers in New England frequently find themselves gawking at houses and New England architecture. And no wonder. With nearly 400 years of settlement behind it, New England hosts a collection of architectural styles that are older and more varied than in any other part of the country.

10 Things to Do Before Leaving on Vacation: Do You Know Them All? | realtor.com

By Liz Alterman | Jun 30, 2017

Things to do before leaving for vacation.
10 Things to do before leaving for vacation.

Heading on a road trip or week at the beach? Lucky you! Before you go, there are certain tasks you need to get done to ensure your home is safe while you’re gone. Because if you’re away for more than a few days, even a leaky faucet could mean you’ll return to a house of horrors. To keep such nightmare scenarios at bay, check off the boxes on this pre-vacation checklist.

1. Turn off the water
Turning the water off to your home can prevent disasters of all sizes. Homeowner Christy Nielson of Dallas learned this lesson the hard way.
“We went skiing in Vail for a long weekend with friends,” Nielson recalled. “When we came home three days later, we realized a hose to our washing machine had broken while we were gone, flooding our entire laundry room, kitchen, and hallway. We had to move out of the house for a month and a half while the repairs were done.” Talk about a rough re-entry to real life!

Sellers: Here’s How to Update Your Home With Looks Buyers Love | Zillow Porchlight

By Kerrie Kelly

Before you list, tweak your home decor and finishes to up your odds of attracting a sale.
When you’re putting your home on the market, you want it looking its best. You know you’ll need to clean and declutter, but what about making cosmetic updates?
Investing in a new look for your home might be well worth the effort. The recent Zillow Paint Colors That Sell Analysis reported that certain paint colors in specific rooms can impact the sale price of a home. And many buyers perk up when they see terms like granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, and subway tile in a home’s listing.
Let’s take a look at ways to work these trends into your home for maximum impact.

Take a nighttime stroll through moonlit flowers and evening pollinators.
By Tammi Hartung

Most of us notice how gorgeous gardens are when the sun is shining, but how often do we see what a garden looks like at night? Between dusk and dawn, when moonlight illuminates the plants, visitors can enjoy unique insight into a garden’s personality.
Night pollinators such as moths, native bees and bats are attracted to plants in a moon garden with white and pale-colored flowers that are intensely fragrant and produce a lot of nectar. As you walk through the moon garden, you will be able to watch these varied and industrious third-shift pollinators as they go about their important work.

1960’s Round House Style | Houzz Video

Stylish 1960's Round House
Stylish 1960’s Round House

Whatever the era of your home…Stay true to its roots. If you have a vintage home with a “pink tile bathroom” and it is of quality materials…keep it and enhance it. If there are architectural or interior design elements that are good quality and are of the era of the home don’t tear them out just because they don’t fit today’s fashion. Of course, not every home is a candidate for authentic preservation but if you have one be careful in any renovation project you undertake. Start your research by looking at examples of the style in old magazines online or design books. As they say on Antique Roadshow…don’t polish the patina off because it ruins the value! This video captures the perfect blend of house and the people who have stewardship of its quirky style.

Declutter Your Way to a More Organized, Intentional Home

Hoe To Declutter Your Home
How To Declutter Your Home

On a scale of 1 to 5, how much do you need to declutter? Dorothy Breininger’s clutter scale is here to help.

Although I have always been organized, there were two significant moments in my life that taught me how to manage clutter.

The first was when I returned from a backpacking trip around the world. Having visited homes in many developing nations, I no longer wanted to have such excess in my own home. My possessions were organized, but I had too many of them for my taste.

After I unpacked from my journey, I began a thorough review of my stuff. I started upstairs, removing unnecessary items floor by floor. By the time I reached the basement, I had enough stuff to set up a second apartment.

Winter doldrums, be gone — with just a little love and care, your plants can thrive despite the chill.

It isn’t just you — your houseplants really do look worse in winter. Blame it on dry central-heated air, shorter days, changing light patterns, and cold drafts — and the fact that some plants go nearly dormant in winter anyway, even in their own habitat.

These obstacles make houseplants more vulnerable to problems like over watering, poor drainage, and pests than ever before, but don’t let it bring you down. Instead of counting down the days until spring comes — or your plant dies on its own — follow these guidelines to keep your plants healthy all season long.
